Medium Format on a Budget : TLRs

So what does it all boil down to? Pretty much boils down to the fact that TLRs are one of the cheapest and easiest ways to get into medium format photography. They're unique, and often times quite fun to use. Also plenty of options to pick from for under 200 to 300 USD. Not to mention you'll probably get more heads turning using a TLR than an SLR camera. So they can be quite a conversational piece when you are out shooting.

There may be some situations where a TLR are absolutely not suitable for you. Macro photography can be one example especially if you don't have the patience to use compensation. Other situations can be with high speed or sports when you need to be able to view straight ahead and focus. Or perhaps a higher shutter speed is desired in which case focal plane shutters found on most SLRs is an option. All of these are something to consider when looking at TLRs, in most cases a TLR will work fine, but if not it may be best to save up for a SLR.

Stick around for the budget guide to medium format SLRs.
